What is Elastane?

Elastane is an elastic synthetic fiber that impresses with its extreme stretchability, enormous tear length, permanent shape retention and its very low weight. The combination of these properties makes spandex a popular blended fiber for comfortable, shape-retaining and snug-fitting garments, such as our erlich textil underwear. So in addition to the pleasant wearing benefits of our main materials cotton and modal, a small amount of elastane in almost all our material blends ensures shape retention and comfortable elasticity.

Sustainability

How sustainable is Elastane?

It is important to us that we only use materials made from natural, renewable or recycled raw materials for our textiles. In the case of elastane, this is unfortunately not yet possible for us, as there was no sustainable alternative on the market for a long time. However, due to the high demand for more sustainable fibers, the market has changed significantly. Now recycled or biodegradable elastane alternatives are available. However, switching to these alternatives is a costly process and will take some time. We are aware that the production of conventional spandex requires high energy input and non-renewable resources. Therefore we try to keep the use in our products as low as possible. In order to still be able to guarantee you a minimum of elasticity and fit in the articles, we only mix in a small amount.

The right care for Elastane

Washing

Our erlich textil products with a proportion of elastane should not be washed hotter than 40°C, as the fibres will break if heated too much and the positive properties can no longer be guaranteed. It is better to select the gentle wash cycle for the washing programme, as the spin cycle can easily cause garments with a proportion of elastane to lose their shape.

Tip: Do something good for the environment and your erlich textil products and avoid using fabric softener. Instead, you could try a few drops of clear vinegar. This will keep your garment in good shape and at the same time soften the water and decalcify your washing machine. Don't worry, the smell will be gone by the time it's dry.

Drying

If you want to have something of your clothes for a long time, you should avoid hanging them up with clothes pegs and dry them while lying down. The weight of the wet material can put unnecessary strain on the elastane fibres and stretch your favourite piece.

Ironing

Elastane is virtually wrinkle-free and quickly returns to shape after washing/drying. If you do need to use an iron, make sure the temperature is low.
