Finding the perfect underwear shouldn't be complicated. You want a fabric that feels wonderful, lasts a long time, and is environmentally friendly. The problem: Lyocell and organic cotton are both great, and both have different advantages.

In this article, we'll explain honestly and without marketing promises what matters with both fabrics, so you can make the best decision for yourself.

What is Lyocell (TENCEL)?

Lyocell is a man-made fiber, but produced with a clear conscience. It is derived from wood cellulose, mostly from sustainably managed forests. This is important: The raw material does not come from petroleum, as is the case with other synthetic fibers.

Just want to know what lyocell actually is, without the cotton comparison? Read our in-depth lyocell material guide.

Wood fiber with a closed-loop system: The special feature of Lyocell is its manufacturing process. The fabric is produced in a closed-loop system, over 99% of the chemicals are reused. TENCEL is the brand name among Lyocell fibers, produced under particularly strict standards.

Lyocell. The Advantages:

  • Incredibly soft, silky
  • Smooth surface, less friction
  • Temperature regulating
  • Ideal for sensitive skin

Lyocell. The Disadvantages:

  • Higher price
  • Less robust than cotton
  • Requires more careful care

What is Organic Cotton?

Organic cotton (certified organic farming, kbA in German) is cotton grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Strict standards apply to organic cotton: no genetic engineering, no chemical fertilizers, no use of problematic pesticides.

Plant fiber with organic cultivation: This protects the soil, water, and workers in the fields. Organic cotton is a significant difference from conventional cotton, which is usually heavily treated with chemicals.

Organic Cotton (kbA). The Advantages:

  • Robust and durable
  • Becomes softer with every wash
  • Universally compatible
  • Better price-performance ratio

Organic Cotton (kbA). The Disadvantages:

  • Absorbs sweat more, dries slower
  • Slightly grippier feel
  • Not quite as silky soft

Lyocell vs. Cotton in Direct Comparison

Property Lyocell (TENCEL) Organic Cotton (kbA)
Feel Silky soft, smooth surface Warmer, grippier, gets softer over time
Moisture Management Excellent, temperature regulating Good, but absorbs sweat more
Durability Good, requires gentle treatment Very robust, gets better with age
Skin-friendliness Ideal for sensitive skin Well tolerated, but rougher fiber surface
Sustainability Closed-loop system, low water use Ecological cultivation, but more water
Price Higher Moderate to medium prices
Care Wash gently, do not spin Easy, robust in washing

Result: There is no clear winner. Lyocell scores points for skin feel and moisture management, cotton for durability and price. It depends on your priorities.

Which fabric is better for sensitive skin?

To be honest: Lyocell wins here. The smooth surface and lack of friction make Lyocell the first choice for truly sensitive or irritated skin.

However: Organic cotton is also a solid option. Many people with sensitive skin enjoy wearing organic cotton underwear. The decisive factor is often not the fabric alone, but also the workmanship. Flat seams, no annoying labels, and high-quality craftsmanship make all the difference.

Sustainability Compared

This is where it gets interesting, because both fabrics have their advantages:

Lyocell

Production is indeed very environmentally friendly. The closed loop means less water consumption and fewer chemicals in the environment. However, the raw material (wood cellulose) has to be transported. The footprint also depends on where the wood comes from.

Organic Cotton

Organic cotton is more sustainably grown: no pesticides, better soil, better conditions for workers. However, organic cotton cultivation still uses a lot of water. But the difference to conventional cotton is significant.

Bottom line: Both fabrics are more sustainable than conventional alternatives. If the production process is more important to you, choose Lyocell. If cultivation is more important to you, choose organic cotton (kbA). Even better: combine both in your underwear mix.

Choose the fabric that suits you

Lyocell and organic cotton are both excellent choices for high-quality underwear. There's no clear winner. It depends on your personal priorities:

Choose Lyocell

If you want maximum softness, have very sensitive skin, or sweat a lot at night.

Choose Organic Cotton

If you prefer durable, uncomplicated underwear and have a tighter budget.

Choose a Mix

If you're not sure. This way you can try both fabrics and find out what you like better.
